\u201cBefore there was a universe,
\nBefore a star or planet,
\nWhen time had still not yet begun \u2014
\nI scarcely understand it \u2014<\/p>\n

Th\u2019 eternal Word was with his God,
\nGod\u2019s very Self-Expression.
\nTh\u2019 eternal Word was God himself \u2014
\nAnd God had planned redemption.<\/p>\n

The Word became our flesh and blood \u2014
\nThe stuff of his creation \u2014
\nThe Word was God, the Word was flesh,
\nAstounding incarnation!<\/p>\n

But when he came to visit us,
\nWe did not recognize him.
\nAlthough we owed him everything
\nWe haughtily despised him.<\/p>\n

In days gone by God showed himself
\nIn grace and truth to Moses.
\nBut in the Word of God made flesh
\nTheir climax he discloses.<\/p>\n

For grace and truth in fullness came
\nAnd showed the Father\u2019s glory
\nWhen Jesus donned our flesh and died:
\nThis is the gospel story.<\/p>\n

All who delighted in his name,
\nAll those who did receive him,
\nAll who by grace were born of God,
\nAll who in truth believed him \u2014<\/p>\n

To them he gave a stunning right:
\nBecoming God\u2019s dear children!
\nHere will I stay in grateful trust.
\nHere will I fix my vision.<\/p>\n

Before there was a universe,
